The Fallen
The Tones In Which We Speak
February 2001
Released: 2000, Independent
Rating: 4.0/5
Reviewer: Waspman

Well, I guess this is a bit of a freebie ‘cause Rick already reviewed these guys awhile back, but I didn’t realize that it was the same band until I had already received the CD. But enough of the useless back story behind the CD, let’s cut the crap and go straight to the music, ‘cause that’s exactly what The Fallen do: cut out all the bullshit and bash in your skull with crushing riffs. Man, this is one pissed off bunch of guys! “Suffer With It” is a instant introduction into the band, a speedy opener that batters you with pure aggression while at the same time managing to be catchy enough that it doesn’t bore just as quickly.

It doesn’t take long to realize that The Fallen is part of the same school of metal as Skinlab, Pissing Razors and old Machine Head. That being said, there’s also some death metal influence in the vocals and some thrashy riffing going on. Needless to say, The Fallen never gets boring! This CD is full-on aggression and power all the way. The band covers all the bases from fast and pounding (the awesome “Bloodwash”) to slow and grinding (“Harbinger”) to everything in between. For me though, the highlight of the disc is the one-two punch of “Turning Hollow” which is a more mid-paced song that leads into the thrash-fest of “A Sunken Ploy”. Brutal stuff! My only complaint is that none of songs are too original. Ah, who cares, just headbang to the damn thing!

This is a seriously awesome CD. Anybody who likes aggressive metal played full-throttle will love this disc. Go get this CD and bash some skulls!
