The Defiants
The Defiants
June 2016
Released: 2016, Frontiers Records
Rating: 4.0/5
Reviewer: Waspman

Hard rock golden boys Danger Danger (D2) reunited with original vocalist Ted Poley back in 2004 but have remained relatively quiet on the recording scene. Mid-years vocalist Paul Laine obviously remained on good terms with the guys though, as minus drummer Steve West, The Defiants are a basically a reunion of the 1993 – 2003 era of D2.

That intro basically tells you everything you need to know about what you’ll hear on this self-titled debut album. Yep, it’s jammed full of catchy, anthemic hard rock that will have you singing along and shaking your head. After a short intro, “Love and Bullets” just explodes out of the blocks with the album’s most memorable riff and melodies and it’s like 1989 all over again. Love it! Laine still sounds great and Marcello/Ravel obviously haven’t lost their knack for writing great rock songs.

The album runs through all of the tricks late ‘80s hard rock bands were known for, but perhaps with more polish and maturity. The ballads are few (2 of ‘em) and well-written, coming off as sincere instead of cliché, and the rockers just kick ass. In fact, the band saves two of the best for the end of the album, as “Take Me Back” and “Underneath the Stars” are the most energetic and tremendous riffsters they band have ever done (including D2!). A couple of the tracks don’t quite measure up to the top quality of the rest of the album (I’m looking at you “Lil’ Miss Rock ‘n’ Roll”) but I’m 99% sure that THE DEFIANTS is just about the most fun album that will come out in 2016.

Obviously, Danger Danger fans simply need this album. The Defiants may be a new band in name only, but their wealth of talent and song writing experience makes this album a must-hear for hard rock fans.
