The Devil Wears Prada
Zombie EP
July 2010
Released: 2010, Ferret Music
Rating: 3.0/5
Reviewer: Robert Williams

With three full length releases already under their belt, Dayton, Ohio's metalcore six-piece The Devil Wears Prada have released the five song ZOMBIE EP as a stop-gap release between albums. The ZOMBIE EP is a conceptual piece of work composed after vocalist Mike Hranica finished reading "The Zombie Survival Guide" by Max Brooks.

The noisy and claustrophobic riffs of "Escape" open up the ZOMBIE EP, sounding a bit like something reminiscent of Hatebreed with synthesizers. "Anatomy" features a symphonic and cinematic interlude prior to inducing some up-tempo and aggressive riffery and double kick drum assaults. Vocalist Mike Hranica stays pretty uniformly throaty in his delivery throughout the first half of this tune, clean vocals are used sparingly as "Anatomy" fades out with bottom heavy breakdowns. Newscast samples warning of a virus outbreak and urging the public to "destroy the brain" of the zombies, segues into the progressive and heavily syncopated framework of "Outnumbered" a tune very much in line with the math metal of Meshuggah. Keyboardist James Baney has done a fantastic job of adding eerie atmospheric elements whilst keeping a soundtrack like feel to the music. "Revive" is the real moshpit slugfest on display here, featuring a ton of breakdowns and pinch harmonics, I would imagine this one ought to go over well live with fans of TDWP. "Survivor" has a militaristic feel courtesy of some snare rolls interspersed amongst chugging guitars and clean vocals heavily soaked in reverb. I think the band was trying to create something a little more epic in feel than the previous four tracks, as this one is structured much differently than the rest of the tracks on ZOMBIE.

It's worth noting that The Devil Wears Prada is a self described Christian metalcore act, so it's refreshing to see a band let loose of their personal convictions long enough to write an EP based on brain eating Zombies. This EP should serve to keep their fanbase entertained until the next platter of chugging riffs is unleashed. The modern production of Joey Sturgis complements the band's playing an offers up a futuristic tone, but the cover art should have been way cooler. When your writing an EP based on brain hungry zombie's you got to go for the gore and this EP is lacking visually all together in that respect.
