The Scent of Darkness
Released: 2001, Silverdust Records
For a relatively new act The Armada seem to be headed in the right direction. They have only been together since early 2001 but they have already put out a great sounding 5 song E.P. The lineup is Mathias Nagl: keyboards, Damir Uzunovic, Matthias Mailiander: bass, Peter Langer: drums and Dirk Schaffner: vocals. As I have already said. THE SCENT OF DARKNESS is a 5 song E.P. Really there are only 3 tracks as there is the obligatory intro and also a prelude to the final track which clocks in at only 40 seconds. "Tribal Dance" is the first full track and it sets a high standard for the band to follow. Great mid paced track which is followed by "Voices". This track has an almost prog metal feel and belies the fact that The Armada describe themselves as symphonic powermetal. The fastest track is the closer"Wheel of Fate". This is more alon the lines of what I would call symphonic powermetal but the keys still have a proggy feel to them.
Seems like Germany is still one of the worlds hotbeds of metal. They have no problem with creating metal bands. It might be off interest that Peter Langer, the bands drummer, is a member of the legendary German metal band Stormwitch who many newer metalheads will know as the originators of the song Ravenlord that has been masterfully covered by HammerFall. With 3 songs it would be easy for the Armada to put all their best songs on one CD. I would expect nothing less. If their forthcoming CD is of the same high quality as the tunes found on this disc then The Armada are well on their way to making a name for themselves on the metal scene.
