Earth Ground
January 2015
Released: 2014, Witching Hour Productions
Rating: 4.0/5
Reviewer: UK Team

Thaw is a Polish black/experimental metal band, founded in 2010, which consists of members of acclaimed bands such as Sun For Miles, Searching For Calm and Furia.

EARTH GROUND is the 6th release by Thaw, 8 tracks clocking at just over 40 minutes. In which the band traverse black metal, noise, sludge and avant-garde musical passages to create an eerie, disturbing and intense record.

The album begins with doom ridden guitar line, reminiscent of early electric wizard (with a considerably less fuzz ridden tone) and a bleak atmospheric sound that brings an ominous start to the album.

What then proceeds that is dense, amorphous guitar riffs and relentless blast beats, with grim wretched vocals. However Thaw keep the contrast fresh by incorporating clean guitars and atmospheric sections, then breaking into monolithic riffs that are laden with grooves and eerie harmonies, before breaking down into pure noise.

There is also some impressive arrangements on this record, despite it's denseness, there are subtle keyboard lines and gregorian-like vocal harmonies that rear their heads at the perfect opportunities. Giving the record a huge epic lift, orchestral and diabolical.

When hearing this record I am recalled to bands such as Blut Aus Nord, Dragged Into Sunlight, Leviathan, Altar Of Plagues and Behemoth, but while there are sections that recall these thoughts, Thaw definitely don't rip off or follow cliches, more that their influences are shown, but they meld them into their stylistic creations.

Stand out tracks for me are "Afterkingdom" "Soil" and "Winter's Bone".
