The Almighty
S/T
June 2000
Released: 2000, Sanctuary Records
Rating: 4.0/5
Reviewer: Pete

The year 2000 sees the re-formation of The Almighty, a band that held the claim as "the best British metal band since Maiden"; huge overseas, but only making a minor dent over here, which is rather sad.

Being a huge Almighty fan, I was stoked when I heard they were reforming. If you're not familiar with the band, their sound meets a cross between Motorhead /AC/DC / The Clash. Pretty fucked, 'eh? Although this release is not as aggressive as their second-last release "Crank", the band proves it still delivers the goods.

On their seventh release, Ricky Warick still seems a bitter man with his angst-filled lyrics spewing forth their anger with society and life in general, and do it quite convincing. From the opening grind of of newest member Nick Parson's penned "Broken Machine," tracks like the driving "La Chispa De La Muerte" and "TNT" contain the signature Almighty sound, but tracks like "White Anger Comedown" and the Clash-influenced "Barfly" are where Warwick influences shine thru. "Big Black Automatic" could be a definite contender for a single, with one of those hooks that stays in your head all day. "For Fuck's Sake", with it's ugly opening riff, is pretty self-explanatory, as Ricky shouts "Let's go burn down the Fucking world."

I've always called the Almighty my "best kept secret"; whether that'll change with this release, who knows???? A great comeback, sure to be killer live, as I've seen that they'll be supporting the mighty Maiden on some of their tour dates. Check it out.
