Eyes Unfolded
September 2007
Released: 2007, Firebox Records
Rating: 1.5/5
Reviewer: Anders Sandvall

Terhen was formed under the name Thamuz back in 2004 and that same year saw their first demo released. After gathering more material the band was offered to do music for a fashion show in Beijing. That gained the band huge success because of the very unordinary way of promoting themselves. In the following year came their second demo called SELF CRUSIFIXION MMV and it was that demo that landed the band their deal with the Finnish label Firebox.

Terhen’s music of choice is doom metal with smaller goth metal influences. The band has got two lead vocalists: one male and one female called Jyri and Elisa, respectively. Jyri sings growling vocals while Elisa sings more ordinary vocals. To make the music stick out a bit from the crowd, they use violin in their musical landscape. While using violin may be unexpected, it doesn’t mean that it makes the sound any better.

Even though the album clocks in at 1 hour, there only 5 songs featured which means that they are quite long. You can hardly say where one song begins and the other one ends because they are so similar to each other. The third problem with this album is Jyri’s lead vocals, which sound really awful from time to time. He sounds exactly the same throughout the entire album and he’s got no variation in his voice whatsoever. The parts where Elisa sings sounds much better and stronger and it’s actually listenable at that point.

There’s nothing wrong with the rest of the album; the music and the musicians do their job OK but the main problems are Jyri’s singing and the forgettable songs. EYES UNFOLD doesn’t offer you an experience worth remembering and if the band is gonna make it they have to do something about Jyri’s vocals as well as the material. Terhen is only bearable in small amounts as it is now.
