Decrowning the Irenarch
December 2008
Released: 2007, Invictus Productions
Rating: 4.0/5
Reviewer: Luxi Lahtinen

Prepared to get some filthy and cold steel through your innards? Wonderful then... So am I. Spearhead, raging through its way from the south of the United Kingdom, have received dozens of very flattering reviews from the media from all over the world for their second album, titled DECROWNING THE IRENARCH. Now having become well familiar with this particular opus in question, I don´t wonder any longer why DECROWNING... has appealed to the media people plus extreme metal community so much. It´s those two names that constantly seem to pop out from Spearhead´s blackened death metal every time when listening to them, over and over again. I mean, if you a fan of the more extreme side of metal, then you are also be able to pick up on Morbid Angel´s as well as Angelcorpse´s influence instantly (well, and yes, with some hints from Marduk´s malicious direction, too) out from these UK´s premier death commandos.

In all honesty it needs to be admitted that Spearhead obviously don´t bring the most innovative or original arsenal of ideas to the streets with them, but all that intensity, devastating brutality and amazingly skilfully crafted songs they have managed to get into the songs of this 11-track effort, is definitely something that makes you raise your thumbs up for them. There´s no soft, or fragile, or weak spot in their blackened, well thought-out death metal assaults at all, and in fact the more you listen to this album, the more it punishes you each time - harder and harder, no matter if you beg for mercy or not. Who wouldn´t love to become severely punished by a good load of some of the most wicked and razor-sharp riffing, Trey Azagthoth-type of blistering solo work, totally deranged vox, infamous blast-beat attacks and so on? Spearhead take what they want - and we all better get used to it, real quick.

DECROWNING THE IRENARCH is a must-have release for anyone into ferocious, well-produced black/death metal. Long live the king - even longer live these vicious beasts in Spearhead from the U.K.!
