Canadian Carnage! Because I am a true patriot, once or twice a year I like to do a quick spotlight and some short reviews on newer, independent, underground Canadian Metal bands. That time is now! Thanks to all of the bands who sent me material for my spotlight. In the spirit of the PMRC, I have chosen a ‘Filthy Fifteen’ (+1!) as some (but not all!) of the bright lights, innovators and leaders of Canadian Metal. Most of them are independent bands releasing their debut album or EP in 2017. Check these bands out, they are the future of Metal! They are (listed alphabetically)…

Abomb (Calgary)

Decatur (Toronto)

Emblem (St. John’s)

Evereal (Mission)

Hammerdrone (Calgary)

Heaven’s Fire (Toronto)

Hounskull (Mississauga)

Ice War (Ottawa)

Maglor (Calgary)

Monarch Woods (London)

Operus (Toronto)

Osyron (Calgary)

Solarus (London)

The Lightbringer (Quebec City)

To The Mountains (Lethbridge)

Votov (Winnipeg)

With an album cover reminiscent of Edenbridge’s SUNRISE IN EDEN, Solarus have launched their debut REUNION on the world. It is a bit of an odd title for a debut release, usually you see that album title for a live album released by older bands like Black Sabbath, Twisted Sister, or Candlemass who reunite. Yes they all have live albums called REUNION.

This trio young hails from London, Ontario and are a real find. REUNION came out on January 1st, but I did not have the pleasure of hearing it until November. Solarus play a very sophisticated type of symphonic Power Metal. Led by the very appealing vocals of Sarah Dee, this band have quite a European sensibility. There are many symphonic and orchestral parts under a thick bed of crunchy guitars and overtop all of it is the soaring, sweet voice of Dee.

Big keyboard swashes accent the overall sound, hints of acoustic guitar add nuance, and the whole albums have quite a fast pace, check out ‘Shadows Lifted’ for a great example of all these elements in one great song. There are some sound effects as well giving the whole album a dense feel, there is lots of epic and majestic Metal here!

I am so pleased that young home-grown Canadian bands are bring this predominantly European sound to our humble shores and the debut by Solarus is a fantastic example of how to do this sound well.
