Pride E.P.
June 2004
Released: 2003, J Records
Rating: 3.3/5
Reviewer: Lord of the Wasteland

Last I heard from SOiL was when they were cranking out “Halo” back in 2001. The video was all over the music channels and it was on hard rock radio, too. Not only that, the band landed on Ozzfest. Honestly, I had chalked them up as a “one hit wonder” but when this little “teaser” E.P. found it’s way on to my desk, I was happy to give them a chance. PRIDE is a warm-up for the full-length CD, REDEFiNE, that will be out this spring.

“Pride” is a catchy track that reminded me of a heavier Stone Temple Pilots or Econoline Crush track at times. The song is also featured in THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE. “Cross My Heart” is actually the better of the two new songs and Sully Erna should be suing vocalist Ryan McCombs for stealing his vocal patterns! This is a great tune with a heavy bottom end and melodic chorus. The remix of SoiL’s big hit, “Halo,” is unnecessary and really takes away any balls that the original track had by replacing the drums with a static electronic beat that muddies up the sound far too much. I suppose a remix might lure some SoiL completists into seeking out this E,P., but it is totally forgettable to everyone else.

SoiL is a great hard rock band that has a lot to prove on their sophomore major label release. Their breakthrough album, 2001’s SCARS, got the ball rolling and this E.P. should get some mouths watering for when REDEFiNE comes out.
