Released: 2012, SAOL
I was first introduced to this band on the 2013 version of the 70, 000 tons of Metal cruise. Just a few minutes of seeing them live was all I needed to become a fan. I went and bought their album at the merchandise booth that very day. This relatively new German band has been around since 2007 and this is their second album from 2012. Apparently they used to be called Stainless Steel but there was another German band already called Stainless Steel (I actually have one of their albums) so a name change was in order.
ON HIGH WINGS WE FLY is an independent album supported by the SAOL (Service For Artist Owned Label) group that have been doing good things for many years. The package is nice; lyrics, photos and the album has a decent cover of a mechanical angel of some sort. The album was produced by Geoffe Thorpe, and I’m assuming it is the same Geoff from Vicious Rumors. You can’t go wrong when a band has a sword in their logo.
The Steel Engraved quintet deliver True/Power metal to the masses. The album has some nice velocity but not just double-kick. The tempo and pace are strong as the band runs through the ten tracks in under an hour. In my mind, the stand-out tracks are ‘Solitary Mission’ and the title cut. Vocalist, Marco Schober hits some nice high notes and some mighty screams but sings in a middle register for most of the time. His tone reminds me a bit of Biff Byford. There are lots of classic Metal solos in each and every song. There are a few other musical flourishes like the organ heard on the intro of the aforementioned ‘Solitary Mission’. Steel Engraved fall very firmly in the Priest/Maiden classic school of Metal.
ON HIGH WINGS WE FLY is a very solid album. I feel with a bit more experience and a stronger identity the band have enormous potential. The basic ingredients are all intact, good songs, good sound, good performances and delivery and I’d recommend this band to all true Metal fans.
