Skid Row
Thickskin (3 song sampler)
July 2003
Released: 2003, Skid Row Records
Rating: 3.0/5
Reviewer: Rick

I just recently had the opportunity to interview Dave “Snake” Sabo from Skid Row regarding their “comeback” and their forthcoming CD entitled THICKSKIN. It was a very interesting chat and Snakes enthusiasm piqued my interest in the new CD which is supposed to be released at some point in March. Days after that interview I received this 3 song sampler which was meant introduce me to the new material. Well unit of original members Snake Sabo: guitar, Rachel Bolan: bass and Scotti Hill: bass along with drummer Phil Varone and vocalist Johnny Solinger have left me scratching my head a little bit. The sampler opens with “New Generation”, a mid tempo “modern rocker” that left me with a bad Marilyn Manson aftertaste in my mouth. Since this is a sampler they get the benefit of the doubt. It doesn’t sound like Manson other than its “Beautiful People” stomping sound which I am sure the band thinks will gain them some new fans. Up next is “I Remember You Too” a punked up version of one of their big hits “I Remember You”. The tempo is turned way up and it’s a surprisingly good song, if it didn’t have to stand up to the original. Knowing how great the original is, it is hard to listen to this version as its missing the magic that made the original one of the best ballads ever. The sampler closes out with the first single from THICKSKIN, “Thick is the Skin”. This is a pretty good song that could have found its way onto SLAVE TO THE GRIND or SUBHUMAN RACE.

If the whole Cd was songs like this then I don’t think there would be room for worry. Since I haven’t heard the whole disc I am going to wait till I hear the whole thing before I make a judgement. Right now I am going to concern myself with these 3 songs. “Thick is the Skin” is a pretty good song while “I Remember You Too” is an interesting if unneeded remake while “New Generation” hopefully is not the direction the band is heading. This sampler has rekindled my interest in Skid Row and look forward to hearing the full THICKSKIN CD.
