The Curse Of The Avenger
May 2016
Released: 2016, Revalve Records
Rating: 3.5/5
Reviewer: JP

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again; you can never have too many Italian power Metal bands! The latest batch of metal warriors to enter the battlefield are Skeletoon.

I have to admit I don’t like the band name, it seems weird…probably the word ‘toon’ reminding me of a cartoon, perhaps implying it is silly or childish…but the band is certainly not. The album cover is nice, they have a good logo and for a debut the eight track albums seems a little short. Skeletoon like their Helloween and they like the 80’s influences as many of the songs are full-on 80’s era Helloween styled speedsters. The vocals of Tommi are quite dramatic with lots of with lots of melodramatic intensity and power. He may not be technically rhe most gifted singer but he makes up for it with an infectious enthusiasm that works well in Metal when people who can’t really sing (in a classically trained sense) make up for it with sheer balls. The album has three really fast classic Euro Metal songs, a pair of mid-paced true Metal songs a gorgeous acoustic ballad called ‘Hymn to The Moon’ and a very decent power ballad that would not be out of place on a Skid Row album. All the songs are very well written, lots of good hooks and the fast songs are really fast, just blazing with some great drumming. The guitar solos stand out as well, it’s all quite impressive, not earth-shattering but well done for a first time.

THE CURSE OF THE AVENGER is a little schizophrenic with many different styles crammed onto one album, but all of those styles are decent so it works in the end. I’m impressed with the band that has presented us a solid and entertaining debut and I hope they continue on.
