Soilent Green
Inevitable Collapse in the Presence of Conviction
November 2008
Released: 2008, Metal Blade Records
Rating: 4.0/5
Reviewer: Waspman

Soilent Green have had a long, respected career thus far, but due to the unfair amount of tragedy the band has endured (including the death of ex-vocalist Glenn Rambo during Hurricane Katrina), they have only managed to release 4 previous full-length albums in twenty years of activity. Having gathered themselves after the devastation that struck their homes in 2005, the band has unleashed their latest lesson in violence, INEVITABLE COLLAPSE IN THE PRESENCE OF CONVICTION (ICITPOC).

No more, no less, ICITPOC is another sludge-filled slab of metal madness. Soilent Green have always brought a strange open-ended style to their Southern metal, and this album is no different. Although he is not often recognized among today’s guitar greats, Brian Patton truly is an amazing talent. His unrestrained guitar style is amazing to witness as he flows from riff to riff, seemingly at will – within the same song. “Unconventional” would be the word. The rest of the band ably keeps up with him, shifting styles and tempos so seamlessly that serious prog-heads would be envious. O’er top it all, Ben Falgoust howls his guts onto a plate and hands it to you.

One issue with Soilent Green’s style is that their songs are SO free-flowing that it’s tough to latch onto a great riff (although there are many on the album) and really sink your teeth into it. Those that put in the effort will be rewarded though, with the all-out assault of “Blessed in the Arms of Servitude” or the whisper-to-roar of “Rock Paper Scissors”. Hell, the band even tosses in some acoustic guitar and banjo to lead off “In the Same Breath”.

There’s no doubt that Soilent Green is a tough band to love – they don’t make it easy, they just do what they do. Still, if they keep putting out albums the quality of ICITPOC though, no one will be asking them to change.
