Randy Rhoads: The Quiet Riot Years (Book Review)
Released: 2013, Red Match Productions
Red Match Productions recently produced a book and movie companion set about the late, great Randy Rhoads and the early years of the legendary Metal band, Quiet Riot. The book is a large size, hard cover coffee table book and is printed on high quality glossy paper. There are many bonus features as well. there is a full Randy Rhoads era, Quiet Riot tour history covering 1975-1980. The book also comes out with a fold-out poster. The whole package is very well put together. There are a number of interviews and interviews and/or commentary from various people who knew, worked with and loved the members of Quiet Riot.
90% of the photos are from Ron’s collection and there are a staggering amount of really cool shots of the band from back in the day, casual and formal. Ron had pretty much unfettered access so there are lots of historic shots. The layout and design are big and bold so you can get a really good at the pictures on a large scale. Even though the book bears the title Randy Rhoads I appreciate the fact that the book was about the band as much as Randy. Not many people know the early history (pre-Metal Health) of the band and this is as comprehensive as you will get. There are tons of notes and points and interesting shots from all facets of the band, even down of to photos of the rough sketches from the fashion designer, who helped define their look in the beginning. There are old newspaper articles and even the ‘Quiet Riot’ record company tour schedule of the publicity stunt developed by the fan club to petition the various record companies to get the band signed. There is a wealth of material inside. Kevin DuBrows eulogy is also included at the end of the book which reminds us that Quiet riot that exists today has no original members left. I feel fortunate to have seen Kevin with the band in the early 90’s.
This is just as impressive as Rosen’s Randy Rhoads book, which is not surprising because Sobol lent material from his private collection to Rosen for his book. At times my book reviews tend to be long-winded as I analyze and dissect but in this case RANDY RHOADS: THE QUIET RIOT YEARS is pure quality and there is not much left to say! For fans you want to get this and the movie too.
For more information about the book feel free to check out my interview with Ron Sobol in the June 2013 interview section, here at Metal-Rules.com
