Six Dead Horses
Horn Tusk Antler
December 2010
Released: 2010, Self Released
Rating: 3.0/5
Reviewer: Aaron Yurkiewicz

Sometimes, the best surprises are right in your own backyard – such is the case with Orlando’s own Six Dead Horses. Worshipping at the altar of post-doom sludge, Six Dead Horses’ self-released debut EP HORN TUSK ANTLER is a heavy dose of heavy, and should appeal to fans of bands like Zoroaster, Eyehategod, Howl, and their brood. With inspiration stemming from “wizards and pot,” how could they go wrong?

At 3 tracks and 33 minutes, HORN TUSK ANTLER is a big pill to swallow. “Lakota” has a desert-rock styled vibe to its sloth like delivery, while “Human Dragon, Father of Man” begins with some Neurosis like drone before ramping into a groove heavy stomp. “Brutalitarian” is the most straightforward headbanger of the three tracks, and is full of bottom heavy riffs-a-plenty. The band sounds tight and cohesive throughout the marathon slug-outs and really shines when they open up the throttle (check the mid-section of “Human Dragon”). The production is clean enough for the important bits to stand out, and dirty enough to convey the grit of the tunes.

But the best endorsement of Six Dead Horses comes from the band themselves, who describe their sound as “mammoths stampeding through an earthquake fighting ancient bearded warriors on Harleys while listening to Sabbath and punching babies in the faces”. I’m sold. Check out the band’s website for info on how to purchase HORN TUSK ANTLER.
