Smashed Ruins
Silence
March 2010
Released: 2010, Demo
Rating: 2.0/5
Reviewer: Thorsten Zwingelberg

Smashed Ruins is a project with a goal: create atmosphere without distracting vocals and thus add a new dimension to the musical scene.

SILENCE is the result of the decennial friendship of drummer Sven and guitar player Tobias and they’ve been working on the seven songs that were to become the chapters of this musical log since 2005. Well, did they manage to reach their goals would be the question that I have to answer here. And I would clearly say: yes and no. By no means did they invent anything ground-breaking new, but on the other hand they managed to record seven songs without vocals (apart from some screams) that actually create some sort of dark atmosphere.

However, those who expect endless guitar licks and loads of melodic passages will be disappointed by SILENCE. At the end of the day this record is more or less an atmospheric Black Metal record that spares us the vocals. What is actually worth mentioning about this release is that the seven songs aren’t boring even though they are relatively bare compositions. If you ask me, I’d recommend listening to “Chapter II” (which is one of the latest songs on this album) and "Chapter VI", because I feel that those songs have the best guitar melodies and the best riffs.

Smashed Ruins is different but not really a sensation. Anyhow, you should check those guys out.
