Sky Divided
October 2015
Released: 2015, NA
Rating: 4.5/5
Reviewer: UK Team

Sky Divided is a concept album by Finnish progressive metal band Simulacrum and is a homage to the childhood memories of a world full of Sci-Fi literature, computer games and apocalyptic films. By keeping the entire production within the band under Dark Noise Productions, which is owned by their bass and keyboard player, Simulacrum have created an all-encompassing style that captures the interests and influences of their generation.

The interstellar and near symphonic opening of ‘Timelapse’ is overflowing with layered keyboard melodies, interlaced with complex rhythms in the guitars and drums before breaking down into ‘Behind The Belt Of Orion’. I love this already. It is reminiscent of bands such as Star One and Threshold in its composition, structure and vocal delivery which creates a near infinite, vast soundscape which is so rarely realised this effectively. While their influences are clearly visible this doesn’t detract from the strength of this album in any way, as demonstrated by the unusual composition and unexpected turns in ‘Broken’. ‘Embrace The Animal Within’ feels like their most conventional song on the album before flying through a power metal-esque journey in ’The Abomination’ and into the title track. 'Sky Divided’ is full of pounding chord-filled breakdowns intertwined with solo passages on pretty much every instrument. ‘Enter Hyperion’ has a heavier feel, complete with technical, frantic-sounding guitar and keyboard solos underlaid by a computer game feel and a melody that reminded me of Doom. The final track is a 14-minute epic that covers pretty much every musical idea you can throw into this genre, it’s no less impressive than the rest of the album.

Sky Divided is certainly Simulacrum’s ‘labour of love’. This album is brilliantly composed with what must have been endless hours of work. The themes are clearly delivered and the complexity makes this an engaging and fun album. Simulacrum are currently touring in Finland… Come to England, please!
