Silencer formed in 1998 in the heavy metal capital of the USA (ha!) Colorado, USA. Well hey, Jag Panzer hails form there to, so maybe we’re on a roll?? Silencer plays melodic thrash metal, taking bits of Forbidden and Anthrax and mixing it with some more traditional metal elements. Kozmos is only a 5-song EP, well really four because the track “Easter Island” is a short instrumental / sound effects thing. The strongest song on the CD is the opener “Mourning Star.” It begins with a riff reminiscent of “Drive Boy Shooting” from G/Z/R (Geezer Butler’s side project). The song then heads into the typical, but lovable, thrash triplets. The rhythms are the best part of this song as are the vocals that vary from more of a snarl to a clear melodic style. On the CD’s second song “Kozmos” is where I kind of get a bit of the Forbidden sound, mainly on the vocals. It’s hardly as piercing as Russ Anderson used to be, but it reminded me of him. These first two songs are the best on the CD, after that it’s not quite as catchy. The CD closer “Industrial Command” begins with an “Anthrax Among the Living” era riff. Not a rip off, but the influence is written all over it. Silencer has the potential for a lot more as proven to me from this demo. If I had to point out areas to improve on it would be some of the songwriting, the lead guitars (which are not that bad actually) and the mix. The mix is good but some of the guitar sounds could be cleaned up slightly and the lead guitar is a bit shrill. On the whole, this is an impressive introduction to a band with a bright future.
