Sinner
The Second Decade
June 2000
Released: 2000, Nuclear Blast
Rating: 4.0/5
Reviewer: Waspman

The Second Decade is my first introduction to Sinner, having heard an MP3 of “Used to the Truth” and, of course, Mat Sinner’s and Tom Naumann’s work with Primal Fear. All I can say is: “Holy shit! I’ve been missing out!” and “Damn, I’ve gotta get more of this stuff!”

For those that don’t know, Sinner have been plowing along in the German power metal scene for 20 years or so (hey! That’s about as long as fellow German’s Running Wild – must be something in the water over there…) With a massive load of albums and great songs under their belts, it’s taken two “greatest hit” packages to cover Sinner’s entire career. Well, from what I can tell, The Second Decade covers the albums that Sinner released in the 90’s – namely Bottom Line, Judgement Day, The Nature of Evil, and In the Line of Fire – Live in Europe. I guess their production in the 90’s wasn’t as prolific as it could’a been due to Primal Fear.

You know what you’re going to get when you buy a Sinner album – melodic power metal with more than a hint speed and epic-ness mixed in. Of course, it is all of the highest quality too. Naumann’s riffs are impeccable, the rhythm section pounds along quite nicely, and Mat Sinner’s vocals are typical power vocals, although he manages to avoid the high-pitched wails. That’s actually kind of a shame, ‘cause while he perfectly suits the mid-paced tracks, there are some moments in the speed and epic tracks (“Jump the Gun”, “Judgement Day”) where some higher register vocals would have been welcomed. Well, whatever, I can’t really complain, ‘cause Sinner have been doin’ this for too long to really criticize them. Suffice it to say that The Second Decade is a nice introduction to a power metal institution, but I’d recommend searching out the individual albums – like I’m going to!
