Released: 2014, Indie
Despite what some people may think I am actually a big fan of Death and Black Metal as well as other genres. I tend to write many of the true/classic/Power Metal reviews for the site but once in awhile I like to dabble in the underground. My latest little find is a German band called Shrike.
Shrike is a quintet from Berlin who have been around for a number of years and have just released their third release a 30 minute EP called SIEBEN. There haven’t been a lot of changes, the line-up is still the same and they still have their classic spiky/tree branch logo. The band play a fine blend of Black/Death with very raw production. The trebly guitars buzz along aggressively and the pace is mostly fast however they do slow down and add quite a bit of atmosphere on the cut ‘Die Farben Der Sehnsucht’. There are some appealing spoken word parts n the song as well, of course all in German. The vocals of Uwe are very strong as he uses many styles, growls, hisses and a standard harsh delivery as well.
Overall the band seems quite adventurous in their song-writing and presentation, I certainly can hear a bit of influence of Celtic Frost with some avante-garde ideas, nice tempo changes, unconventional arrangements and songs that are comfortable in the 5-7 minute range. SIEBEN was a pleasant surprise and I feel that fans of Black/Death bands who are looking for something new would do well to check this out.
