Markus Grosskopf - bassist for Helloween, and driving force behind Shockmachine for TEN YEARS! Although the band has been around for a decade, it has not been a full-time project and there has been downtime when Helloween was busy with touring or recording. Joining Markus in Shockmachine is Rolli Feldmann on lead guitar, Olli Lugosi on bass and rhythm and Uli Kusch (also from Helloween) on drums! Although this features two members of Helloween don't expect this to sound anything like their primary band. This is a whole new beast that is still metal but with more of a dirty hard-rock edge.
This CD has some great moments especially with the two opening tracks "Dreamers" and "Careless Cries." If the entire CD would of had this feel and aggression I would of liked it a lot more. The track "Careless Cries" is clearly the best on the CD. The upbeat thrashy chorus is intense and makes the song for me! There are a couple of moments that stand out leaving me shaking my head like the King's X sounding "Never Exist" and "Running." "Searching For Love" is one of the better more upbeat tracks. This CD has more of a 90's feel to it with rougher yet still melodic vocals. Lead guitars have more of a blues-based hard rock feel than the neo-classical shredding of say Roland Grapow from Helloween. If you strictly like power metal with the high melodic vocals and upbeat tracks then you won't be as happy with Shockmachine. However, if you are open to metal that is played more from the gut than then perhaps the brain, you might want to check this band out. So although it's a decent CD Uli and Markus had better not plan on giving up their day jobs with Helloween for this. Also of note is the CD's very cool artwork which was done by Henjo Richter!!!
