Signs Preyer
Signs Preyer
August 2013
Released: 2013, Red Cat Records
Rating: 4.0/5

My first impression of Italy’s Signs Preyer was not an entirely great one, as at first I thought they’d snuck a Godsmack track on at the beginning of their eponymous debut. Thankfully it turned out to be more of just an introductory track to the album. What follows is a beer drinker’s delight.

While still a relatively small band, these guys have wasted no time in getting their groove on and writing some well crafted, pumping, grinding tunes which you would have expected to find from a much more established band. There are a few nu-metal sensibilities on display, with most tracks around the mid-tempo mark but overall this feels a bit more just like a straight, well-written heavy metal album. We stray slightly here and there into Metallica and Black Label Society territory, but it seems the desired effect is one of homage and not plagiarism.

Singer/Guitarist Ghode Wielandt lays down his vocal talent with conviction and has an impressive range throughout (but does sound a bit like the Godsmack singer in places.) At no point does it feel like they struggled in the writing or recording of this album, as sometimes comes across with fledgling bands.

The recording is tight and the guitars dripping with tone but all rough around the edges enough so you don’t forget you’re listening to a real metal band. From the looks of these guys, they just like to drink beer and play heavy music and that, for me, is what it’s all about.
