Seven Kingdoms
Brothers Of The Night
January 2009
Released: 2008, Independent
Rating: 3.5/5
Reviewer: Simon Lukic

One look at the cover artwork of BROTHERS OF THE NIGHT and most will label Seven Kingdoms an out and out power metal band. Well the Blind Guardian influences are certainly a big part of their sound but there’s an equal amount of thrash and death metal influences that will surprise many.

“Eyes Of Summer” covers ground Blind Guardian have made famous but before you know it, the band move into something Amon Amarth would write on the second track “Stormborn”. Thrash comes into the picture on “Blackwater Rush” and “We Do Not Sow (The Legacy of Black Harren, Part I)” and the varied approach flows throughout the album. Backed by the clean/gruff vocals of Bryan Edwards and a robust production (the album was recorded in the famed Morrisound Studio) BROTHERS OF THE NIGHT touches on a number of solid ideas but stumbles due to a lack of cohesion. Covering many styles on one album is commonplace nowadays but I’ve come to believe that too much variety lessens the overall experience. Seven Kingdoms are far from directionless but as a listener I’m left thinking about where they want to go as a band?

With that said, BROTHERS OF THE NIGHT will be of interest to many power metal fans who like a heavier approach. So, if epic metal crossed with a touch of 3 Inches Of Blood and Children Of Bodom sounds interesting, then give Seven Kingdoms a go.
