Septycal Gorge
Scourge of the Formless Breed
September 2014
Released: 2014, Comatose Music
Rating: 3.0/5
Reviewer: UK Team

The third album by Italian Death Metal band SEPTYCAL GORGE, Scourge of the Formless Breed, is a brutal and relentless effort that does not waste any time during its thirty three minute duration, as the bands rips through nine gory, blood-soaked tunes that will beat listeners to a pulp. The band manages to infuse technicality into their sound without sacrificing any of the viciousness. Some of the stuff here may remind listeners of NILE and DECAPITATED, as the band follows the guidelines of brutal Death Metal. The production is crisp, clear but at the same time keeps a bit of the dirt that the band's sound requires to make their point efficiently.

What's really good about SEPTYCAL GORGE's approach to music is that it's constantly brutal, and while the songs contain lots of guitar riffs and Technical Metal arrangements, the urgency of the sound is never lost. Even during the slower portions of the album, the band is pretty straight forward, as evidenced in "Deeds of Eternity", which starts off with a pretty atmospheric guitar riff with harmonics, shifting to a killer tremolo picking section. "Urizen - The Burning Sun" has an almost Black Metal vibe at times in its main guitar riff, though the Death Metal approach dominates throughout. The band also incorporates some dissonant riffs which are many times used to accentuate pauses, before going off again into more blasting.

Although there's nothing that we have not heard before in Scourge of the Formless Breed, SEPTYCAL GORGE manage to pull off what the do successfully. What the band lack in originality, they make up with some very impressive chops. Their driven, vicious sound and the ability to pack as much as the band did in under thirty five minutes makes for a fine album that will please fans of Technical Death Metal.
