Meditation Among Demons
January 2004
Released: 2003, Independent
Rating: 3.2/5
Reviewer: Rick

A couple of years ago I reviewed the debut full length from The Netherlands’ Septuagint called WHEN GOOD AND EVIL FALL IN LOVE. Thoughn I thought that the band had promise the aforementioned CD seemed to be missing something. In 2003 the band released this 2-song promo as a teaser for their upcoming full length. If the 2 songs on this promo are any indication, Septuagint has come a long way. The band considers their sound to be a combination of traditional 80's thrashmetal combined with todays style powermetal. The opening track “Meditation Among Demons” fits into that definition to pretty well. I would switch the definition to make powermetal the dominant form and we would have a winner. The song is thrashy powermetal not unlike Brainstorm in some ways. The vocals of Cees are not quite up to the standards of Andy B. Franck but he does an admirable job on this track. The other number on this promo is “Fury… and a Darkening Mind”. The galloping riffs in this song bring to mind the heyday of 80s metal but it is only a passing homage as again this song is firmly rooted in the powermetal of today.

Hearing 2 songs is not enough to gauge how good a full album will be but these 2 tracks prove that Septuagint are heading in the right direction. With their aggressive sound I look forward to hearing the full CD when it is released.
