Paradise Over
December 2014
Released: 2014, Independent
Rating: 4.0/5

With the Irish famous for producing enchanting singers it’s always puzzled me a little why we’ve not seen many Symphonic rock acts come from there. Happily Selene and the beautiful tones of Shonah Lyons are aiming to correct that fact. With a typically haunting Celtic slant to her voice Lyons fits the bill perfectly but at the same time doesn’t come across as just another set of vocal chords in a corset. Her voice has real substance and could easily be compared to the great Tarja in terms of range and sensitivity.

The music too although slightly predictable is well written and performed with a stylish flair. Opener ‘Facing The Mirror’ has a wistful intro before launching into full on symhometal in one leap. The guitar work may not be maestro level but it works perfectly well and if anything it’s a bonus to not hear someone trying to be the next Slash when it’s not needed. My only real concern is the production which is quite thin in places. It’s almost as if the engineer was concerned about clarity but over compensated. The result is that sometimes one instrument or another sounds isolated.

‘Paradise Over’ does so much so well, I could happily listen to Shonah Lyons sing all day and never get bored and the band put enough variation in place to keep interest levels high too. With a fuller sound and a little boundary shoving Selene could be in line to go on to much greater things.
