Second To Sun
Three Fairy Tales
October 2014
Released: 2014, Self Release
Rating: 3.5/5
Reviewer: UK Team

The Russians are coming! No, we're not talking about the entirely legal and not at all invasion-like friendly assistance they are giving Ukraine, but new instrumental monsters Second To Sun, who launched themselves on the metal world with their debut album 'Based On A True Story' last year. Emboldened by a positive response, they have decided to release this three track EP as a teaser for an inevitable second album.

At heart, Second To Sun are guitarists Vladimir Klimov and Anton Danilevski, who beaver away at all the tracks and no doubt high five each other when they come across a good, powerful riff. They must have sore hands, because there's plenty of good, powerful riffs on this EP. The three tracks sound absolutely massive when played at volume, and are riff based rather than solo based. The downside of this is there's nothing to break them up, and it can be easy to find your mind wandering even though they are all under five minutes long.

This is the sort of music that would normally be ruined by some twat shouting or grunting over it, and the absence of such a thing means I actually enjoy listening to it.It could certainly do with a bit of livening up at times, but even so is well played, well produced and well put together generally. It can be fast and furious, experimental and just plain heavy, and it all combines into something that may give you headache after a while, but it's a headache that's well earned. Certainly worth checking out if you love a bit of grindcore without the shouting.
