Septuagint
When Good and Evil Fall In Love
June 2002
Released: 2001, Independent
Rating: 3.0/5
Reviewer: Rick

Where else would I be on a cold rainy night but sitting in front of my trusty(or is that useless) computer banging out Cd reviews for Metal-Rules.com? Anywhere else! :) Unfortunately I am swamped with work so this is where I will stay. Rummaging through my ever growing pile of CDs to review I come across this disc and with it the promo material has a picture of a very large warrior troll. Looks like as good a place to start as any. Septuagint is the band and the name of the disc is WHEN GOOD AND EVIL FALL IN LOVE. The band is from The Netherlands and was formed in 1991 by vocalist Cees. In 1998 the band released a mini cd entitled “... My Darkest Domain”. The band went back into the studio and recorded this CD in 2000 for release in 2001. The lineup on this disc is Cees: vocals, Hans and Mike: guitars, Pepijn: bass and Berry: drums.

Septuagint have set about creating a fantasy epic with WHEN GOOD AND EVIL FALL IN LOVE. In their own words it is “ a fantasy epic of men and monsters, dragons and knights, war and courage”. The disc itself is 13 tracks long and clocks in at 57 minutes. “The Innocent Abandoned” is a tale of knights and fairies and is vaguely reminiscent of Iron Maiden at times. This track sets the tone for the disc and its story of the fantastical realm of orcs and trolls. The story rolls on with the shredder “Palace of Love” then mellows with “Ballad of Aggression”. I don’t know if I would class Septuagint as powermetal. There are more traditional than power elements present in the bands music. Other highlights of the release include”I’ve Got A Secret” and “Accidental Sacrifice: Moment of Truth”.

I have mixed feelings about this CD. Firstly I think the band is solid if not spectacular. Everyone is proficient on their instruments but no one really stands out. That being said I do think they could develop into something great given some time. All the pieces of the puzzle are there its just a matter of finding the right place to put them. http://www.septuagint.nl
