Scarlet Tara
October 2001
Released: 2001, Independent
Rating: 2.0/5
Reviewer: Rick

Promising to not play that "90s alternatve/rap/death crap" Scarlet Tara have released an e.p of 5 songs that they call melodic hard rock that fuses all the best elements of pop rock and heavy metal. The duo consists of Nicky Brand: vocals and David Leopard: guitar. The duo has along for the ride supporting musicians Clint Link: drums and Tim Prindle on bass. Brand and Leopard got together in 1999 will the intention of starting a full band but found they worked better as a duo and went in that direction. They went into the studio in early 2001 and produced this E.P.The Cd opens with the song "Pretend I Never Died". This is one of the more upbeat tracks of the CD. "The Haunting" slows things down a bit with a plodding track that shows some spirited guitar work from Leopard. The band has the requisite ballad "From Beyond The Sea" and closes with the anticlimactic title track.

While overall this is not a bad CD it really falls short in a number of places. The vocals by Brand are adequate but are nothing spectacular. The songs also suffer from the same fate. They have been done before and much better. As anyone who reads my reviews knows, the music which I like doesn’t necessarily have to be groundbreaking, just good. When I hear a song with lyrics that go "That's why I burned your house, But now I wish I hadn't done that shit, Can't we work things out?" I wonder if the muppets are actually real people.
