From Porto in Portugal, rises up the scathing and merciless sounding three piece, Scarificare. Despite being around for seven years, the band still has a pretty small following, and in fact the size of their fan base is what you would expect from a band still in their early demo days. However this doesn’t mean we are guaranteed to hear something we won’t like. Some of the most inspiring and great bands in metal have remained cult and underground for years, Hecate Enthroned and Abgott to name just two. So, how does Scarificare fit in here?

The first thing that hits the listener as soon as they press play is the harshness of the guitar tone. It is in fact too painful to listen to, and a little volume or EQ change is certainly needed to make the listen enjoyable. Once this is all fixed however, Scarificare are sure to please with their rather original sounding, catchy and well played riffs. Guitarist Quetzalcoatl doesn’t stick to black metal clichés here, instead bringing some interesting flavours to mix, which can be heard well on the first track, “Ab Aeterno”.

Punk vibes are bought in as well, emphasised by the rough and ready drumming, short vocal lines, and power-chord based, thrashed out guitar sections. More musical influences come in the form of sweeping atmospheric passages, in the style of suicidal depressive bands such as Xasthur and Leviathan. The vocals are also a good combination of this style and the traditional raspy way of expressing hatred, with a touch of distortion for a great sound that really suits the band.

Things close with “Gnosis” which really works well as a solemn way to end such an emotional mixture of a record. Chants and bells fade out and I feel in a state of true happiness, after a rollercoaster of sounds and feelings conveyed in all the 9 tracks. It seems like Scarificare really are another great unknown band, and one that is definitely worth looking out for.
