Scholomance
The Immortality Murder
April 2002
Released: 2002, The End Records
Rating: 3.0/5
Reviewer: Arto Lehtinen

The shocking front cover with the slitted and a huge carved bleeding cross on man's stomach and two cds included to the same covers may arise anyone's hair up a little bit pondering what the heck this is supposed to be. Taking a closer glance at the details of Scholomance's cds reveals the whole cd package has been divided to two separate cds, as the first one includes the stuff with the growling whereas the second one is an entire instrumental one…Hmm Frankly speaking Scholomance’s music ain’t the easiest one to adopt by listening to it only once as their material definitely material demands more time in order to concentrate and internalize the complex musical approach of Scholomance. Without going really in-depth analyzation of the cd, it could be stated the band mainly tried to various style of metal, from the melodic power metal via avantgarde style to the black metal approach and everything between and especially the vocal deliveries have more or less been influenced by the black metal style as the vocalist sounds very very and has nasty and vicious key. In some way the Immortality Murder album has been wanted to be a real pretentious and ambitious piece of work with complex and melodic parts tied up and added to every track. Unfortunately these kinds of products usually fail bitterly or then sound quite medicore in a listener’s ears and Scholomance’s cd in the long run turns out to be quite boring if the cd is listened as a whole, but listening to it piece by piece is more is more reasonable…

But believe or not the whole opus sounds even better and more interesting without the vocals on the cd as even the instru cds gives more vibes and ideas what kind of musical ideas and visions the Scholomance guys have tried to carry out, whereas the traditional vicious sounding vocals may been added to catch extreme metal listeners…

Interesting opus, but quite boring in the long run….
