Saxon has been a big favorite of mine since back in the early 80’s. Even though their records have had their ups and downs, from ‘85 to now Saxon has always been a great live act. Band members have come and gone but now they have a steady line up. Only Biff and Paul who has been members of Saxon since the beginning.
METALHEAD is an incredibly strong album with not a bad track to be found. Biff still has an amazing voice and he sounds almost as good as in the beginning. Paul and Doug impress a lot on guitar and Nibbs and Fritz are also very good at what they do. METALHEAD starts with the title track. This is 80’s heavy metal as Saxon does best. There’s some more of Saxons strong heavy metal music on “ARE WE TRAVELLERS IN TIME”. “CONQVISTADOR” has an intro with just acoustic guitar before Biff and the rest of the guys join in. This song is quite fast with Fritz putting off a great job behind the drums setting and pushing the speed for the whole track. “WHAT GOES AROUND” is another metal track but this time I can sense some blues influences. Here Biff really proves that he still has an amazing voice. “SONGS OF EVIL”, “ALL GUNS BLAZING” and “WATCHING YOU” are also 80´s heavy metal tunes. In the slower paced “PISS OFF” the blues influences come back once again. “SEA OF LIFE” is an up tempo ballad that closes the album.
As I said before, there’s not a bad track on this album. Every song (made by Byford, Quinn, Scarrat, Carter) is of high standard. It’s produced by Byford and Charly Bauerfield in Karo Studios Brackel in Hamburg, Germany. This is pure, genuine, 80’s heavy metal from one of Great Britain’s best heavy metal band ever.
