The Second Incision
November 2005
Released: 2005, Karmageddon Media/Sound Pollution
Rating: 4.0/5
Reviewer: Anders Sandvall

Scaar plays thrash metal with influences of straight death metal, combined with numerous tempo changes. Takng a long, hard look back through metal’s musical corridors, the music sounds more like old school thrash metal than could be expected from a newer band. At times, Scaar even resembles a young Pantera.

The band recorded this album in 2003 in Studio Underground; it was produced by Pelle Saether, who also mixed the album with the band. Why they waited so long to release the album I really don’t know… The production is in-your-face hard, with a lot of attitude, explosive bass, and blistering drumplay. On top lay aggressive thrash/death lead vocals, along with razor-sharp guitar play-–you can’t not love this album.

Scaar furiosly runs through 9 tracks in 40 minutes, which is quite enough for me. This album have what it takes to make it in my book: the material is well-structured and arranged, and has everything it takes to be an excellent thrash album. The cover art-work is done by Niklas Sundin (Arch Enemy, In Flames etc); as usual he has done a fantastic job expressing what the album is about.

The album would have received my highest rating if it weren’t for a ballad (?!), called “14 Years Of Abuse,” which closes the album. If you play thrash, you shouldn’t be messing with ballads.

Otherwise this is a stunning album, and I can’t wait for the next one.
