The Wake of Magellan
January 1999
Released: 1998, Atlantic
Rating: 5.0/5
Reviewer: EvilG

What can one say about a band that has as much talent and is as diverse as Savatage? I've loved this band ever since I heard the song "Hall of the Mountain King" and then "24 Hours Ago" way back in 1987, and to this day Savatage still are one of my personal favorites. They have it all from aggression to classically inspired sections to soft piano pieces. One thing that I am really happy about is the fact that Jon Olivia still does some of the vocals, along with piano. It just wouldn't be right if he wasn't there considering the loss Savatage suffered with the death of Jon's brother*, lead guitarist Criss Olivia, after "Edge of Thorns." On "The Wake of Magellan" you will quickly realize that Zachary Stevens is a vocal genius as his melodies and harmonies fill this CD - just check out the vocals on "One Child" it's totally mind blowing. If you haven't already, do yourself a favor and give Savatage a listen, you won't regret it!

Note: Criss Oliva was going home from a rock festival early in the morning on Sunday, October 17, 1993. Going down a two-lane highway, a drunk driver tried to pass a semi-trailer truck, but instead hit Criss and his wife Dawn. Criss was killed instantly; wife Dawn recovered at home in Florida. To this day he is sorely missed by all his fans)
