Prepare to Die
Released: 2003, Independent
Reviewer: Night of the Realm
RAW FUCKING THRASH!
So says the back of the back of the second demo tape by the newest thrash band on the Detroit/Lansing undergound scene, and that is precisely what the band delivers. Dirty, raw, uncompromising thrash metal the way Kreator, Sodom, Bathory, and the like used to play way back when. Just the thought of that ought to get your head banging in anticipation.
PREPARE TO DIE is the follow-up demo tape to the UNHOLY INVASION OF THRASH tape from 2002, and shares 3 of the songs (“Unholy Art,” “Bestial Warlust,” and “Thrash ‘til Death”) with the first demo.
There’s not a single light or pretty moment on this demo because PREPARE TO DIE was recorded live (“All fuckups included,” according to the liner), and the production is sub-basement at best. Sauron’s platform is riffs. Fast, Germanic riffs. And solos. Oh, yeah, lots of crazy solos. Victor “Lore Lord” Ruiz is the maniac behind the 6-string. This guy can generate enough chaotic solos and frenzied riffs for two guitarists. Bassist Doomy G. Blackthrash provides a huge sound, that adds a thick, evil atmosphere throughout on this under-produced recording. The real madman in this unholy trinity is Mike “Skinthrasher” Hudson, who is among the best local drummers that I have heard. He previously leant his skills to Somber (melodic death) and Cursed Eternity (power/dark metal) before joining up with Sauron in 2002. Seriously, this guy is fucking insane!
Sauron’s best feature, I feel, is their primitive, raw sound and uncompromising style, which I hope they retain. There is not a weak track on this demo (though their cover of Bathory’s “The Return of Darkness and Evil” could improve a bit, methinks). Their debut album, THRASH ASSAULT is currently being recorded, scheduled for later this year. Score this demo, and PREPARE TO DIE!
