Fact: Band bios are useless. Of course we reviewers expect a certain amount of hyperbole in label bios – they’re doing their best to hype the band, right? It’s their job. BUT, and it’s a big but, we should be able to rely on them for the basics, such as getting a band’s genre right. Case in point: Italy’s Sawthis, a described “modern thrash” band. These guys have been around for a decade now and have 2 previous full-length albums under their collective belt as well as numerous tours with metal luminaries. This is all well and good, except for one thing. Sawthis are not a thrash band.
One listen to opening track “The Logical Colors” will tell you all you need to know about Sawthis’ sound: the song is textbook metalcore, crossed with melodic death metal, both of which were the type at the height of their popularity when the band formed in 2003. Thrash, this is not. Regardless, I will judge the band on their music, not their description of it.
With that in mind, I can say that YOUNIVERSE is chock full of the metalcore sound that was so typical of the early 00’s. Sawthis have obviously been doing this for a long time now, and clearly know how to structure a song within this genre, but there’s nothing on this album that wasn’t completely played out by 2004/2005. The screamed vs. crooned vocals, the twin melodic leads, the faux-death metal rhythms, the breakdowns; it’s all here. The only time where the band really stands out is on “The Crowded Room”, wherein they pile on as many hooks and melodic twists as possible and come out with a truly catchy song.
I do appreciate the band’s dedication to their craft, as well as their perseverance, but after the requisite spins to adequately review the album, I won’t be revisiting this YOUNIVERSE.
