I think Deicide (technically Amon) was the first band to use “Satan” as a verb, but big ups to this mysterious Portuguese duo for taking “Satanize” and running with it as a band moniker. They’re so evil, they’ll not only butcher the son of Jehovah, but the English language as well. “Watch out Christians, or we’re gonna SATANIZE you….”
Digging into to some of their back catalog, releases like HOLY DESTRUCTION RITUAL and BLACK ROTTEN WITCHCRAFT are pretty standard bestial black metal in the vein of Blasphemy, Black Witchery, et al – stripped down and barbaric war metal. Their latest 7” DEATH MASS EXECUTION follows suit with a new set of tunes that make the first Bathory record sound like Dream Theater.
“Purge Sacred Blood” opens with a noise intro crafted by South Florida’s Erratix, and quickly launches into a salvo of treble drenched excoriation. From there, it’s a non-stop race to the pits of hell, as “Doom Conjuration” and the title track are driven by manic percussion blasts, ripping guitars and larynx shredding vocal barks. Whatever minimal polish/production values that may have graced prior recordings have been abandoned entirely on DEATH MASS EXECUTION, giving the whole thing a more intense presentation and probably ups its underground credibility factor.
Even though DEATH MASS EXECUTION is only a 7” and is over with pretty quickly, the over the top fugliness of the tunes can be tough to persevere through. But – that’s part of its charm, kind of like Ninja Gaiden Black; you don’t want to keep going back for more, but there’s some kind of masochist urge deep within that makes you. Maybe that’s the real definition of “Satanize.”
