Sun Red Sun
Final Curtain ( Video Review)
Released: 1999, Sun Red Sun Productions
I honestly wish that I hadn't seen this. The last time that I saw Ray Gillen he was happy and very vital. This video captures some of his last moments and though his voice is undiminished his body and face look tired and close to death which, of course, he was. The portion featuring Ray Gillen is actually the smallest part of this video. The bulk of the 58 minutes is filled with home video of guitarist Al Romano running through chords and soloing in his basement, Bobby Rondinelli's drum clinic, studio shots where the SUN RED SUN records were made and assorted snippets of pot smoking and booger flinging by Sebastian Bach. The saving grace of the whole thing is the live performance footage of a post-Gillen version of SUN RED SUN, it is amateurishly done but captures the band, particularly Romano, absolutely on fire.
It was a short life for a great band and with all of the different versions and compilations of the songs floating around the music isn't likely to be lost. Bottom line, if you are a rabid collector of Gillen memorabilia this is for you otherwise the money would be better spent on one of the SUN RED SUN CDs.
