Steve Morse
Major Impacts 2
April 2004
Released: 2004, Magna Carta
Rating: 2.5/5
Reviewer: JP

I’ll state it up front. I’m not a big Steve Morse fan. However as along time stalwart of the the rock wars I felt he deserved an honourable mention, after all he is in Deep Purple now.

This disc is a really cool idea. As indicated by the title it’s the second time he has done this. He takes a handful of influences and writes songs in the style of that band. These are not covers but all originals. There is a lot of fluff on here, not metal at all really but he does pay tribute to Aerosmith, Deep Purple, ZZ Top, Ted Nugent. There are 13 cuts, all instrumental and a drummer isn’t credited so I’m guessing a drum machine was utilized, but that didn’t bother me.

Nice package with long, elaborate and sincere track by track liner notes and the cool feature is; he doesn’t actually list what songs are what influences. You actually have to listen to figure it out, but if you have a keen eye you can figure it out as well.

Truth be told this is a essentially flawless CD in terms of execution, production, delivery but for my tastes, leaning more towards the Stump’s and Angelo’s of the world, this just didn’t do it for me. I’ll qualify this by saying for Morse fans it is essential and it did make me want to go and dip a bit further into his heavier solo albums, which I am told are quite raw, rough and ready to rock.
