Tank Attack
September 2015
Released: 2009, Third Attackwave Productions
Rating: 3.5/5
Reviewer: UK Team

Last year, Sturmtiger released a brilliant concept album “World at War 1914-1918” through US label Black Plague Records. It was very well received by the international critics and helped them to spread their name within the underground scene. Hailing from different European countries (Denmark, Russia, Poland), those London-based black metallers have recently been touring throughout the United Kingdom (Unholy Conquest UK Tour) as headliners most of the time. They also did a couple of successful gigs in Denmark, Ireland and played at the Extreme Metal Attack festival in Portugal (supporting Norwegian black/thrashers Aura Noir) and the Hot Shower festival in Italy (supporting Brazilian cult act Goatpenis).

While this belligerent legion is currently working on some new material, I’ve decided to have a look at their past by listening to their second EP “Tank Attack” released on vinyl (limited to 300 copies) in 2009 through their own label Third Attackwave Productions. At that time, the band was delivering raw, fast black metal with lyrics and imagery based on the Second World War. It was very different from what they’ve offered in their first opus “World at War 1914-1918”, which leans more towards old-school black/death metal in the vein of Blasphemy, Conqueror and Black Witchery. This 7’’ EP contains two tracks only and as a consequence, it’s not so easy to do a reliable review based on twelve minutes of music.

The first song “Tank Attack” also appears on their debut album as a re-recorded version. I have to say that I prefer the latest version since the production is far better than on the EP. The second one “Conquest” is very interesting as it shows exactly how Sturmtiger used to sound in the past. I don’t understand why those very good tracks haven’t been added as bonus to “World at War 1914-1918” whereas “Knivdrab” and “Mordet I Hammer Bakker” (from their 2007 eponymous EP) have been added to it. Let’s hope those “Tank Attack” bullets will be re-released on CD soon as they’re definitely worth it. For die-hard maniacs only!
