In Putrescence
October 2010
Released: 2010, Agonia Records
Rating: 2.5/5
Reviewer: Luxi Lahtinen

Feel the stench of death in your nostrils? Feeling it crawling on your skin already? If not yet, then feel free to check out the Swedish Death Metal trio called Stench that also features 2 members from the evil Swedish death metallers Tribulation.

Stench, however, comes from a little bit different school of death; they are filthier, noisier and rawer than Tribulation – like a mixture of an unprofessionally ventilated, raw Black Metal mixed together with Death Metal´s hard-boiled heaviness and brutality, as the band´s 8-track debut album IN PUTRESCENCE let all its venom involved in it, speak for those things (blackened Death Metal anyone?).

Unlike Tribulation, Stench hardly manages to offer any of those kinds of thrills to listeners that might necessarily bring them regularly back to this record for steady enjoyment. Don´t get me wrong; it´s all actually pretty cool what they do in terms of churning out simplistic, raw but still catchy blackened Death Metal. The problem however is – or maybe it´s even my problem only, but they are not the first band on today´s globe, armed to the teeth with poisonous injections to take your life, or at least to cause some severe addiction to them. There´s nothing particularly annoying in them either that could suggest treating the album as trash, so I can see a dilemma here: Either you may pick this record for an occasional rotation in your house and enjoy the heck out of it, or leave it totally unnoticed for many years to come – or in the worst case, simply forgetting it completely for good.

Eh, Stench´s IN PUTRESCENCE is still a pretty solid slab of raw and blackened Death Metal, but comparing it to Tribulation´s brilliant THE HORROR, makes things pretty unfortunate and unfair under the light of giving some justification for the album´s existence, I am afraid.
