Sunn O)))
ØØ Void (Reissue)
December 2011
Released: 2011, Southern Lord Records
Rating: 1.0/5
Reviewer: Aaron Yurkiewicz

A reissue of 2 dudes strumming their guitars in a low tuning really slow for 58 minutes.

WTF?

For those not in the know, Sunn O))) is the Metallica of the funeral drone scene, which basically means of all the bands that strum their guitars in a low tuning really slow for an indeterminate amount of time, Sunn O))) are the arguably the most prominent. Now this description may seem like a cynical oversimplification of the duo’s sound, but their recently reissued 2002 sophomore opus ØØ VOID is exactly that.

2 dudes. Strumming their guitars in a low tuning. Really, really slow. For 58 minutes.

I totally get that it’s a vibe record and that it’s supposed to be real cerebral and artsy. But it’s not. It’s 2 dudes…you get the idea.

In all fairness, I dig later releases from Sunn O))), particularly 2009’s MONOLITHS & DIMENSIONS – which if you’re looking for a starter introduction to the band is not a bad album to cozy up to. You still get the minimalist guitar/bass presentations, but the incorporation of synths and additional atmospherics provides additional depth and dimension for a truly powerful and nasty sound.

Since we’ve moved on to the topic of other albums that you’d be better off spending your time with, Greg Anderson has a number of noteworthy achievements on his CV. Aside from being the head honcho at Southern Lord Records (how convenient), the dude played guitar with both Thorr’s Hammer and Goatsnake, the latter of which was one of the best riff based doom bands to come out of the genre since the Obsessed. Go to the Southern Lord webstore and order a copy of I+DOG DAYS or the FLOWER OF DISEASE reissue; that way Greg still makes a few shekels and you don’t feel bad for not buying ØØ VOID.

But I digress. Aside from the scene hipsters that’ll declare it better than DARK SIDE OF THE MOON, this reissue of ØØ VOID won’t do much for you other than round out your collection.
