Mens Intus Pavor
March 2014
Released: 2014, Fallen Through Ice Records
Rating: 3.5/5
Reviewer: UK Team

In the frosty lands of Aberdeenshire resides Asphyxiator, the man behind numerous Scottish black metal bands such as Mystiabllus, Unholy Deathcunt, and most notably, the UKEM signed Demonic Cremator. However, that is not enough for this man, as 2014 sees yet another release, this time under the name of SPIRITUS.

Released on good old fashioned cassette and limited to just 30 copies (nearly all of which are gone by now) on Asphyxiator’s own label Fallen Through Ice Records, this is certainly an obscure and underground self released EP/demo, but certainly one of the best of the year. The guitars are scratchy and played with a punk attitude, delivering decent riffs if not great ones, and some late 80s style tremolo solo work is shown off on final track “Images of the Next Life.” A frantic and deranged approach is shown on opener “The Art of Negativity” and third track in “Dragged Down Further Still.” However it is the swirling guitars on “Portraits of the mind” that I find most appealing, with their unconventional yet highly memorable charm.

There’s little new and exciting to be found in any of these four tracks, but at least Asphyxiator offers us another consistent slab of raucous black metal here again. Those who are keen and avid followers of the UK underground scene should keep their eye on Spiritus, for there may be more to come!
