Spiritual Eclipse
June 2001
Released: 2001, Hailstorm Productions
Rating: 2.5/5
Reviewer: Waspman

Hailing from San Jose California, Spiritual Eclipse is yet another band who have chosen to throw their collective hat into the quickly over crowding black/death metal ring. What makes them different you ask? Well, to be honest, not too much. Now, that’s not to say that the band aren’t any good, because that’s not true either, it’s just that I’m not hearing much on AMARANTH that I haven’t heard elsewhere.

These hybrid bands always lean to either the black or death side of things and “Sangue de Lupo” gives ample notice that Spiritual Eclipse is more entrenched in the blackened side of things. Pounding blastbeats and tortured elf screams are the order of the day...until the death metal he-man takes over the mic. Hmm...I think I’ve heard this formula before. Throw in a dash of acoustics and ambiance and this should come out just right. Ah, there’s “Manifesto”. Perfect and ready to serve. On the other hand, both of those songs are extremely heavy and catchy and are thankfully produced fairly well.

Things do get more interesting on “Lamentations of the Lingering Soul” which sounds like the more aggressive side of Anathema, complete with anguished wailing. This is actually a pretty decent song but could use improved vocals to make it that much more affecting. Finally, “Circle of VII” closes out the disc in typically fast black/death fashion, blurring into lands already traveled by the opening two tracks. Spiritual Eclipse is still a young band and has a lot of room for improvement, which we’ll hopefully see on their next outing.
