Stryper
Live At The Whiskey
November 2014
Released: 2014, Frontiers Records
Rating: 4.0/5
Reviewer: Waspman

Stryper’s been on quite a roll in recent years, and it all culminated in the release of the excellent NO MORE HELL TO PAY album last year. That album was, in my opinion, the best Stryper release since TO HELL WITH THE DEVIL. Capitalizing on that record’s success, Stryper are back again with a new live album, recorded at the legendary Whiskey in Los Angeles. This is the band’s first live album in a decade, so it’s a good time for the band to strike while the iron is hot.

Kicking things off in ripping fashion with two tracks off of their latest album, Michael Sweet and the boys waste no time in showing off how good a live band they still are. “Legacy” and “Marching Into Battle” are heavy and lively, even with some slightly dodgy backing vocals in the latter. Sweet still sounds amazing after all these years, and the rest of Stryper are still as talented as ever, particularly the underrated Oz Fox. After the two openers, it’s a full-on “best of Stryper” set, touching on almost all of the band’s best-known songs. Some might lament the fact that the band doesn’t play “Honestly”, but really, I’m OK with them skipping that overwrought ballad. Two more new songs make the list (“No More Hell To Pay” and “Jesus Is Just Alright”), before the band throws a curve and include “All For One”, from their much-maligned AGAINST THE LAW release. It’s a great song and it’s cool to see that the band tried to dig a little deeper for the set list. Topping it off is the closing trio of “The Way”, “To Hell With the Devil”, and “Soldiers Under Command” – arguably Stryper’s three best songs. For a Stryper fan, I can’t imagine it getting any better than this. My only complaint would be that they ignored their first two reunion records, REBORN and MURDER BY PRIDE; it would have been cool to hear a couple of cuts from those.

Love ‘em or hate ‘em, Stryper have truly delivered of late, starting with last year’s new album and now this ripping live document; kudos to the band for still kicking ass 30+ years into their career. Fans can buy this record immediately, and even lapsed fans that gave up on the band will probably love this.
