Raunchy
Wasteland Discotheque
November 2008
Released: 2008, Lifeforce Records
Rating: 2.0/5
Reviewer: Anders Sandvall

These Danes are about to follow up their last studio album called DEATH POP ROMANCE from 2006 with this brand new disc entitled WASTELAND DISCOTHEQUE. The band has been on tour with Soulfly and they did the Danish Dynamite Tour in 2006 together with Volbeat and Hatesphere who are from Denmark.

The band continues where they left off and keeps on delivering something they call futuristic hybrid metal. This in my ears is nothing but modern melodic thrash metal but instead of focusing on the most aggressive parts the band has focused on bringing forward the more melodic elements. To do that the band has incorporated keyboards and synths and in much larger amount compared to on previous releases. Music wise the band has a lot in common with Fear Factory, In Flames, Linkin Park and Soilwork.

Sure, the members are skilled and experienced but I am a bit reluctant about the music. I think the band has moved towards a more pop-like sound which doesn’t really feel metal. The sound is far too nice and common. Lead singer Thomsen doesn’t convince at all and neither does Christensen on vocals. The rest of the musicians give a more solid impression but they can’t save the album. There are a few good songs but when the main material stinks of keyboards. This could have been a great album but the members are lost somewhere in the middle of keyboards and synths.

The production made by Jacob Hansen in his Hansen Studio and despite his good reputation and knowledge he has over focused on the bloody keyboards. I thought he had better judgment than the band but apparently not. The production is also a big disappointment.

This wasn’t a happy meeting at all, it’s sad because I thought that Raunchy knew better than to bring in so much keyboards in their music. Instead of investing in Wasteland Discotheque buy the new Soilwork or In Flames album.

Killer tracks are “The Bash”, “Warriors”, “Straight To Hell”, and “Welcome The Storm”.
