Reprisal Scars
Dead End Road
March 2008
Released: 2008, Self-released
Rating: 3.5/5
Reviewer: Luxi Lahtinen

Reprisal Scars, this heavy weight Finnish death/thrash group, have already recorded their 4th, 4-song demo, DEAD END ROAD, which is also the band´s last demo...for now. Nope, be not afraid - they haven´t split up or put the band on hold status or anything like that, but are just concentrating on writing new stuff for their debut full-length album. So there.

Having not heard of any of Reprisal Scars´ previous three demos, it´s actually very easy for me just to nail my thoughts down about the band´s latest output and say: "You guys kick some serious ass there...!". The band plays some sort of hybrid of death and thrash metal, and yet even spices it with some tiny pieces from more of traditional metal´s direction. When "Resurrected" bursts out from the demo (telling a story of the famous serial killer, Jason Voorhees), you cannot go wrong with the rest of the tunes on the demo either. The guys treat their songs with a really heavy touch, trying to keep a suitable and fitting balance between hammer-heavy rhythms and more melodic sections that get blended together in a real fine way in the end. "Blinded Eyes", while not getting hyped as much as the 1st song on this demo, "Resurrected", is a decent effort from Reprisal Scars that doesn´t get me TOO hyped up though. "Color of Violence" could be the song that would put masses of people in motion at their gigs, I believe. Fast and vicious it is - what more would you need. Also, at this point of writing it should also be mentioned that the band´s new Mr. ´Throat of Death´ Teemu, is able to do such deep death grunts that many other death growlers should pale in comparison to his very strong voice. I bet Teemu´s death growls is one of those things on DEAD END ROAD that many will pay attention to first when people sink their noses deeper into the arrangements of their songs.

Last but not least, the title track "Dead End Road" closes the band´s demo chapter in a fine way, being a somewhat dark and heavy fucker with its atmosphere, and definitely leaving us something to wait for as far as the recording of these heavy and atmospheric Finnish deathsters´ first real album is concerned. I´m already pretty excited to hear it, I can tell. ;o)
