Red Giant
Devil Child Blues
February 2005
Released: 2004, Small Stone Records
Rating: 4.0/5
Reviewer: Waspman

Another addition to the Small Stone roster of stoner rockers, Red Giant manage to stand out from the crowd by simply rocking harder (and loving it!) than the rest. Well, except for Throttlerod, but that’s another story. Anyhow, the Giant ones are a bunch of scruffy hooligans from Cleveland that have managed to make a name for themselves through two previous releases (on Cambodia Records and TeePee Records respectively). After contributing a track to the Small Stone tribute to Aerosmith, they were snapped up and put to work on this, their third opus.

A little less spacey than previous efforts and a whole lot more rockin’, DEVIL CHILD BLUES is a swift kick in the gut for a scene that is quickly bloating with crap. “White Mom” gets things going with a fuzzy riff that won’t quit, and it only gets better from there with the pure rock fury of “Hoping for the Golden BB” and dissonant anger of “John L. Sullivan”. Oh yeah, did I mention that these guys have some of the best song titles I’ve ever seen?

Sure, the fury does let up in a couple of filler tracks, but these are easily made up for by the other great songs on here. And believe me, by the time that you get to the utterly nutso “Funhouse”, with its jazzed out saxophone, you’ll be reaching for that repeat button because these is one of the fastest 50 minutes you’ll get out of a stoner rock album.
