Empty Heart:Loaded Gun
September 2007
Released: 2007, Corporate Punishment
Rating: 2.5/5
Reviewer: Waspman

I’m stunned. Not by, as you may have guessed by the mediocre score above, Re:Ignition’s debut album, but by the fact that this new, commercial hard rock act contains Steev Esquivel from Skinlab on guitar. I know Skinlab wasn’t the most beloved of metal acts, but I never had a problem with them. I guess being largely inactive since 2002 wasn’t paying the bills, so Steev and his Skinlab bassist Snake joined up with a more…modern band.

Indeed, Re:Ignition should go down well with today’s average rock fan, as they sport many traits that are the rage these days. To wit: Got guitars that aren’t really heavy but contain enough bite to make them seem dangerous? Check. Got angsty, but “everyman” lyrics? Check. Got a vocalist that sounds like he’s of the same lineage as Vedder, Stapp, Cornell, and Kroeger? Check. Got music that is vaguely influenced by respected acts like Tool and Soundgarden? Check. OK, GO.

Truthfully, I’m being overly cynical in the preceding paragraph, but the fact is, I just can’t help but feel the palpable sense of greed and need for acceptance coming from this band. A more open minded listener could likely sit back and enjoy the easy-listening cruise of Re:Ignition’s music, as it’s not that bad. Opener “Short Memory” is a nice, crunchy rocker, easily the best track on the album. However, the rest of the album just glides along the waves, making nary a ripple. It’s just so damn generic that it’s impossible to get even a little excited.

Hey, I hope it works out for the guys. After all, Steev’s been slogging it out in the business for a long time; a little success is probably deserved. It’s just that I won’t be there, listening along.
